Service week to begin

Cal State Long Beach colleges and student organizations will exhibit various community service programs during their Six Days of Service, beginning Oct. 25.

"This is the first official week of service, but we are planning for it to be an ongoing annual event," said Vasanthi Ananth of Student Life and Development.

During the week of service, each of the colleges and student organizations on campus will sponsor activities such as workshops, public presentations and panels highlighting community service. Each day a different college will host a variety of events to showcase its service activities.

The service week, created to promote community involvement and service, will offer an opportunity for students to become aware of the different types of campus programs that provide community service and for the different colleges and student organizations to exchange their ideas, Ananth said.

Edward Zlotkowski, a pioneer in the field of service learning, will kick off the week with a presentation on the fifth floor of the University Library on Oct. 25 at 6 p.m.  The week will conclude with a community clean-up project Oct. 30 in the 6th District of Long Beach.

Students, faculty and staff will join community members in painting and doing other clean-up activities throughout local area communities for the Saturday service project. The day of service, co-sponsored by various university organizations -- including the Community Service Learning Center, Associated Students Inc. and Long Beachís Department of Community Development -- will conclude with a barbecue lunch at noon.
