Too many babies
The United Nations released its annual State
of World Population Report this week. The report shows a significant decline
in the world birthrate.
Unfortunately, Wednesday was the day the
world population was supposed to reach six billion. Thatís a lot of people
buzzing around this big old ball of clay.
But on the shiny side of the coin, the
U.N. expects the population to begin to level off or decline as early as
2050, according to the report.
That means fewer people will be using the
Earthís precious resources. The population boom of the early 1960s helped
spur the destruction of the rain forests and increased the dependence on
fossil fuels.
Realistically, greed is really eating up
the rain forests. But with fewer and fewer greedy people in the world,
we can at least sustain the tragic razing of the green oxygen makers.
Some other population researchers think
that while birthrates are beginning to level off, the world population
will continue to grow to about 10 billion people. And parking is bad enough
already!
Just imagine what the world would be like
if we had four billion more neighbors. That would really make finding an
apartment in Long Beach difficult.
It's a good thing that most researchers
are predicting the world population is going to decline. We have too many
people for our own good. The natural resources we have can barely sustain
the the six billion people here now. Letís hope the population never reaches
10 billion. |
