Mariachi music, Mexican food and native
Latin American arts and crafts accented the Latino Heritage Month celebration
held at The La Raza Student Association sponsored the celebration. The
association organizes the event every semester in observance of Latino
Heritage Month celebrated from Oct. 15 to Nov. 15.
About 250 students, enticed by the smell
of carne asada tacos and the tunes of mariachi music, joined the event
held in front of The Nugget.
"This is a celebration of the contribution
that the Latino culture has made not only here in the United States, but
also throughout Latin America," said Salvador Madrigal, president of La
Raza.
"We're pretty much just showing people
that we [Latinos] are here and that we play a big role on this campus,"
he said.
Madrigal said that Latinos represent more
than 30 percent of the population at CSULB.
He said everything at the event represented
the mix of La Raza's membership.
"I think it's a good event," said junior
Amanda Peñalosa, a psychology major and La Raza member.
"I would like to see it a bit more organized
to try to get a bigger following, Peñalosa said. Other than that,
the people here [students] are very supportive."
"I think it's great that we have this support
here [at CSULB]," said Isabel Mungaray, a junior majoring in criminal justice.
"It shows that Long Beach is for us here. They support us."
According to La Raza, the organization
has been directing and influencing the history of CSULB and the surrounding
community. |
