"We had a couple of must-wins against Pacific and San Diego on Sunday," 49er Head Coach Ricardo Azevedo said. "We had some guys sick, some guys playing with a fever, and I'm proud of them."

In their final game Sunday afternoon, the ninth-ranked 49ers (8-8, 1-3) edged No. 10-ranked UC San Diego, 5-4.

LBSU fell behind 2-3 in the first quarter, but scored two in the second to take a 4-3 lead.

The Tritons scored one more in the third, but the 49ers added one in the fourth to go ahead for good.

Five different 49ers scored in the game, while sophomore Jonathan Samuels scored three goals for the Tritons.

In the Sunday morning contest, the 49ers downed No. 5 Pacific, 10-8. LBSU took a 3-1 lead in the first quarter and never trailed. The Tigers scored four in the fourth quarter, but came up short at the end.

Senior Shane Lindstrom scored five goals for the 49ers, a career high.

The 49ers met No. 1 UCLA in their second game of the tournament Saturday afternoon, losing 11-5. LBSU posted a 3-1 lead in the first quarter, but the Bruins scored five points in the second and took the lead for good.

"Against UCLA we had a really good game, although the score doesnít reflect it," Azevedo said.

LBSU senior Corey Dolley scored three goals in the losing effort, while Bruinsí juniors Sean Kern and Adam Wright scored three  each.

Azevedo said, "we just ran out of bodies. We had a lot of guys sick and injured."

LBSU dispatched No. 8 Pepperdine ,13-8 , in the tournament opener, going up four goals to two in the first quarter and never looking back.

Dolley once again led the 49ers with three goals, including a two-pointer. The Wavesí Peter Joseph and Greg Lonzo scored three each.

On Friday, the 49ers traveled to Berkeley to take on No. 4 UC-Berkeley in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation contest. The Golden Bears promptly handed LBSU its worst loss of the season to date, 10-2.

Cal outscored the 49ers, 6-0, in the first half. The 49ers scored their only goals in the third period, both by Dolley.

The 49ers had not lost by more than two points prior to this game. The 49ers faced the Golden Bears once previously this season in the Southern California Tournament, which resulted in a 5-4 loss to California.

Notes:  Azevedo said charges  against 49er Patrick Cochran, stemming from a Sept. 23 party that grew into a riot, were going to be dropped.

However, Laura White, a representative of the Long Beach City Prosecutorís office, said neither charge has been dropped.
