States need help
Arizona senators are trying to pass a law
through Congress that would make the federal government pay for the costs
of illegal immigration.
The senators, Jon Kyl and John McCain,
want the U.S. government to pay for the increased cost of processing illegal
immigrants and medical care for border states and states with high immigration
rates.
It is the federal governmentís responsibility
to pay for at least some of these costs. It is the only entity with the
power to control the tide of immigration.
If the government is not willing to help
stem the influx of illegal immigration, then it should provide relief for
the states and counties that deal with this problem on a daily basis.
The Associated Press reported that a lawyer
with the Mexican American Defense Fund agrees with the senators.
"The federal government collects more taxes
from illegal immigrants than state and local government," Thomas Saenz
told the A.P.
If that is really the case, we need to
re-evaluate our relationship with our federal government and the Immigration
and Naturalization Service.
There is no reason the government can't
step in and help out states with massive illegal immigration problems.
If Saenz is correct, then the U.S. government has an even larger responsibility
to help states pay the cost of illegal immigration.
When Long Beach has boatloads of illegal
immigrants pulling into its ports, the city has to find some way to compensate
for the loss of revenue. |
