Cal State Long Beach employees required
to drive university vehicles to get around campus or to distribute supplies
must take a defensive driving course, said University Police officials.
"If I can only teach you one thing that
will keep you out of an accident, this is worthwhile," Campus Police Cpl.
Rick Goodwin told students during a course Tuesday morning.
Goodwin, who has been instructing the course
for two years, said he hopes that participants will get the most out of
the one-time certification course.
Employees must get certified before they
drive on campus in areas where regular automobiles are not permitted, Campus
Police said.
"When driving the carts, you are still
responsible for all of the regular rules of the road," Goodwin said. "You
can drive across sidewalks if necessary, but pedestrians always have the
right of way."
Goodwin told the class that a detailed
map of the campus will be in each cart, displaying the specific routes
available.
The course is not just for cart drivers.
It is for anyone who wishes to drive an automobile on campus in areas not
designated for regular traffic.
The course also outlined the basic driverís
education rules of the road, such as always wearing a seat belt, keeping
mirrors adjusted properly and never wearing headphones while driving.
"I do a lot of driving on campus to give
tours to visitors," said Barry Lightner, recruitment specialist for the
University Outreach Program. "The course is a great refresher for
those of us who haven't taken a driver's course for 10 to 12 years."
The course, which is free to students,
is offered once a month, except during the holidays.
