Long Beach State easily took care of the competition both at home and on the road.

The two wins over the weekend over Pepperdine and UC Irvine kept the 49ers (13-2, 5-1) in a tie for first place with Pacific and Santa Barbara.

In just three games, No.5-ranked LBSU defeated No.11-ranked Pepperdine Thursday night at The Pyramid.

The 49ers then traveled to Irvine Saturday for another shutout over UC Irvine, allowing the fewest number of opponent points all season (15-3, 15-4, 15-2).

The home-court advantage did not apply to the Anteaters Saturday night, as the tight 49er defense forced an Irvine hitting average of .000 for the match.

"Our front row people, especially our middles, dominated the game," LBSU Head Coach Brian Gimmillaro said. "Tayyiba and Cheryl were really in control."

Sophomore middle blocker Cheryl Weaver finished the match with 12 kills and a .706 hitting percentage. Sophomore Tayyiba Haneef tallied eight kills and seven total blocks, hitting .727 percent.

LBSU led by 12 points in Game 1 at the first game point serve. The Anteaters gained a sideout and served an ace before the 49ers regained control and finished the game 15-3.

The 49ers went on a nine-point run after UCI scored the first point of Game 2. Irvine was allowed three more points after a serving ace and a few kills. However, LBSU quickly closed the game with some notable plays by Weaver, Haneef and red-shirt  freshman Blair Wilkes, who made her debut at the UCI match.

Freshman setter Brittany Hochevar came into Game 3 with the 49ers leading 6-0. Hochevar recorded six assists and an ace during her brief performance in the match. Hochevar served match point and senior Anja Grabovac killed for the win.

"It was nice to see Brittany get a little time," Gimmillaro said. "She did a very, very nice job."

Thursday's home match against Pepperdine (15-5, 15-8, 15-12) marked a high point in LBSUís development.

"We started to look like Long Beach, with the movement, the flow, the offense, the defense, the interaction and the relationship between players," Gimmillaro said. "We distinguish ourselves from other teams."

The 49ers distinguished themselves from the Waves with nine unanswered points to start Game 1. The Waves redeemed themselves with three consecutive points, but 49ers Weaver, Grabovac, Veronica Walls and Brandy Barratt pounded down kills that enabled the win (15-5).

"Long Beach is very good, they make you change [your strategy,]" Pepperdine Head Coach Nina Matthies said.

Weaver and teammate sophomore setter Keri Nishimoto blocked for the first point of Game 2. They teamed up again after a long rally when Nishimoto saved a ball and Weaver finished it with a kill.

The 49ers held the Waves by at least five points throughout the match. Weaver went up for a solo block to bring the game to a close and senior Kristy Kierulff served an ace for game point.

LBSU saw a different Pepperdine at the net during Game 3.

"They [Pepperdine] relaxed right at the end because they had nothing to lose," Gimmillaro said.

Senior outside hitter Barratt served the first match point at 14-4. The Waves gained control and went on an eight-point scoring spree, allowing the 49ers nine unsuccessful opportunities at match point. Kierulff served the  final match point, and senior Walls killed for  the win.
