The University Student Union was broken
into over the weekend in an apparent attempt to break into the automated
teller machines on the first floor, University Police said.
Damage was done to two of the walls housing
the machines.
No money was stolen from either ATM, police
said.
The individuals entered a restricted area
of the Student Union that only employees have access to, said a source
at the Student Union in charge of building security, who asked not to be
named.
University Police Sgt. Michael Wood said
he does not know how many suspects were involved.
"It's hard to tell really," Wood said.
"Maybe one, maybe two."
Once inside, the would-be thief then burrowed
a hole in the wall of the room used to service the Bank of America ATM
and the wall adjacent to the Washington Mutual ATM, according to a source
at the Student Union.
"The crime took place some time between
9 p.m. Friday and 7:42 a.m. Monday," Wood said. Wood added
that no one over the weekend reported damage to the walls.
The suspect was not detected by several
alarms, Wood said. The motion detector alarm in the Student Union was not
in a good position to detect any motion in the area of the ATMs.
Each ATM had an alarm inside the adjacent
rooms as well, and neither went off, Wood said.
The Student Union should ìwork on the alarm
system to cover more area,î Wood said.
The Student Union is going to add an additional
alarm system to cover the area of the ATMs, according to the Student Unionís
maintenance department, which is in charge of building security.
The proposed system will be installed very
soon, according to the department.
Damage to the walls may cost up to $500
to repair and will be paid by the banks, said representatives of the maintenance
department.
Wood said the campus police do not know
how the suspect was able to burrow through the vestibule walls. |
