Our View

Racism haunts U.S.A.

It is a sad state of affairs when both whites and blacks agree racism is an issue that will plague America in the new millennium. That is exactly the point a new ABC poll made last week.

Racism is a horrible disease eating away at our nation and its ideals. It is still one of the biggest social problems American society faces as we head into the millennium.

America was founded on the pursuit of life, liberty and happiness. Racists and hate-mongers threaten the existence of our freedoms.

It seems like the country is moving backward. Maybe we should be reverting back to the 50s and 60s when racism and prejudice sparked the nationís civil rights movement.

It is sad to think that after 225 years, people in our country are still so ignorant and fearful that racism is still running through our nationís veins.

We need to come up with some innovative ways to promote tolerance and understanding before hate and ignorance tear the nation and our neighbors apart.

That's not to say that we have to like each other, but we at least should make an attempt to understand other views.

Just because people have different skin color, religious beliefs or customs than we do doesnít mean we should discriminate against them.

In fact we should invite them in for frigging tea and crumpets. Diversity will only enrich our lives. We need to do all we can to destroy these negative stereotypes.

The more we learn about other races and ethnicities, the more we better ourselves.
