Another close loss for menís water polo

By Tom Harshbarger

The team missed it by that much -- again.

So far this season, the No. 9 Long Beach State menís water polo team (5-6, 1-2) has faced all three teams that have been ranked No. 1: USC, Stanford and UCLA. The 49ers have lost all these games by a total of five points.

LBSU took the Bruins to double overtime Tuesday in front of a raucous crowd of 606 at Belmont Plaza only to lose 13-11.

"I thought the crowd really helped us out," senior 49er Corey Dolley said. "We showed everybody out there we came to play."

The Bruins (7-1, 2-0) posted a 4-1 lead in the first quarter. The 49ers then stormed back to take a 7-5 lead at the half.

UCLA went up 9-8 in the third and added one more goal early in the fourth quarter to take a 10-8 lead. But with just over a minute left in regulation, sophomore Chris Segesman launched a two-point goal to knot the game at 10.

In overtime, the teams traded goals before UCLA junior Sean Kern scored two more goals, including one with 32 seconds left, to put the Bruins up for good. The 49ers attempted a few more shots in the closing seconds to no avail.

"We had some adversity tonight, we fell behind 4-1," 49er Head Coach Ricardo Azevedo said. "But instead of rolling over or singing our sorrows, we went right after them and played with a lot of heart."

Bruins junior Sean Kern scored four goals and junior Brian Brown added three goals, including a two-pointer.

LBSU's Patrick Cochran and Segesman each had two goals in the losing effort, including one two-pointer apiece.

Azevedo said UCLA has one of the best defenses in the country, and is encouraged at his teamís offensive performance not only against the Bruins, but against other Mountain Pacific Sports Federation teams.

The nine MPSF teams hold the top nine spots in the collegiate rankings.

"I'm a very realistic person," Azevedo said. ìWeíre not going to get invited to the NCAA Tournament over teams with better records or bigger names."

The 49ers travel north Friday to take on UC-Berkeley. They will then compete in the Northern California Tournament on Saturday and Sunday at Stanford.
