No. 5 ranked Long Beach State tested out
a new style of defensive attack on Cal State Fullerton Tuesday night.
However, it was the 49ers' old style that
resulted in a four game victory (15-1, 15-13, 13-15, 15-3).
Fullerton runs the same type of heavy-hitting
offense as Nevada and Pacific, so LBSU Head Coach Brian Gimmillaro said
he tried a different strategy.
"What we did in the second and third game
was different," Gimmillaro said. "Not just our level of performance, but
our strategy was different. I wanted to see if we could block some difficult
balls."
Fullerton stole game three during
one of these 49er defensive trial periods. The last time Fullerton forced
a four-game match against the 49ers was November 16, 1996.
However, when the 49ers opened the match
with their old style in the first game, they allowed the Titansí only one
point for the entire game.
The 49ers were so effective in this style
of play, they hit .484 percent for Game 1, compared to only .129 for the
Titans.
"They're good," Fullerton Assistant Coach
Carolyn Zimmerman said. "They have the weapons, but we flat out didn't
play game one."
In Game 2 the 49ers led by 4 points before
relinquishing five points to the Titans.
Later in the game, Fulllerton went on another
five-point run to pull out of the (8-10) deficit.
With the Titans leading (13-10), LBSU called
a time-out.
The 49ers responded with sophomore Cheryl
Weaverís powerful kills and senior Brandy Barrattís serving ace which contributed
to five points and gave the 49ers the win (15-13).
The Titans grabbed an early lead in Game
3 and served for the game twice. Weaver took away Fullertonís first opportunity
with a kill.
However, as the Titans regained the sideout
for thier second chance at the win, 49er senior Anja Grabovac hit
the second game point long. This resulted in the 49ers losing the game
(13-15).
"If Fullerton could play with that intensity
every night, they would beat most teams," Gimmillaro said.
"Honestly, I can't feel that we lost,"
CSUF Assistant Coach Nestor Rodriguez said. "To us it was a win."
