Student Union  relaxes students

Taking time out of hectic schedules to enjoy life on campus, Cal State Long Beach students relax with the convenience and resources of the games area on the first floor of the University Student Union.

"I come here just about every day in between classes," said freshman Ed Tadem, while he planned his next move on one of the billiard tables.

"It's cheap, they don't charge as much as outside places," Tadem added.

The billiard tables are only one of the activities the games area offers.

The entire room is devoted to recreation.

Students can enjoy table tennis, a big screen television, an arcade with 25 video games, a bowling alley, piano rooms and an outdoor swimming pool that is open to the public.

The billiards and arcade room are the most commonly used by students, said Markus Wetmore, a games assistant of the USU. But even though these activities are popular among some students, many other students donít know that the game area exists.

"I've been here for three years, and it's amazing how many people don't even know the bottom floor exists," Wetmore said.

The facilities are available to the general public, but CSULB students receive a discount on rental prices of the billiard tables and the bowling alley.

"As long as we're generating revenue, we can keep the prices low," said Lisa Molina de la Loza, assistant director of services, recreation and retail operations in the USU.

All revenue from the games area goes into the USU general fund, she said.
