Football is not needed
Associated Students Inc. President Toby Sexton
is trying to bring the glorious game of football back to Cal State Long
Beach. His plan would cost students an additional $123.46 per year.
But we have to ask; do we really need football
at CSULB? The answer is simple. No.
Los Angeles does not have a professional
football team, taxpayers donít want to pay for one and the city will do
fine without one.
The same holds true for CSULB. Students
barely make it to The Pyramid to see top-ranked volleyball and basketball
teams. Blair Field rarely fills up when the baseball team has a home game.
Why do our A.S.I. representatives think
it will be any different for the grid iron giants? It is kind of presumptuous
for them to think everyone on campus is that big of a football fan.
Okay, I know there are many people on campus
who feel a deep loss without a 49er Football team. But there are plenty
of colleges in the area that do have football teams.
Why not drive up the 110 freeway to the
University of Southern California? Or a real diehard could trek up to Pasadena
to the Rose Bowl.
Football might bring more school spirit
to CSULB, but itís pretty obvious that SoCal doesnít want to pay for professional
football, and CSULB students wonít want to pay for a team either.
Our A.S.I. leaders are pretty arrogant
if they think they speak for the entire campus when they try to bring football
back to CSULB. Especially if they think we are going to pay for it! |
