Dub All Stars bring history back to campus

Smoking, drinking and drug use wafted through
the air Monday night in the University Student Union Multipurpose Room.
The Long Beach Dub All Stars sang about all these things and more to a
sold-out crowd.
The band, who performed during the early
'90s at The Nugget as Sublime, formed two years ago after the death of
the lead singer Bradley Nowell. The Dub All Stars played for about 700
people to promote its new album, "Right Back."
The Dub All Stars now include Opie Ortiz
on lead vocals, Bud Gaugh on the drums, Eric Wilson playing bass, Marshall
Goodman on the turn tables and percussion, Ras 1 playing guitar, Jack Maness
on the keyboard and Tim Wu playing the saxophone.
The Dub All Stars opened the show with
"Get Ready," a song from Sublime's 1996 self-titled album. In fact, almost
half of the songs of the evening were Sublime covers.
It appeared as if the Dub All Stars might
have been trying to continue the Sublime legacy or pay a tribute to Nowell.
But there were other hints of Nowellís
influence around the room also. Lou-dog, Nowell's famed Dalmatian was sleeping
in the back of the room. Ortiz's vocals were often times very close to
Nowellís and the Dub All Stars' original tunes even sounded like something
Nowell would sing.
Fortunately, most of the people in the
crowd were Sublime fans and enjoyed the renditions of Sublime songs.
The playing of cover songs brought so much
of Sublimeís history to the stage, but after a while it felt like a Sublime
concert without the benefit of seeing Nowell perform his tunes.
But, Ortiz did a pretty good job of taking
the lead, despite his toothless grin. |
