Sometimes a team can be its own worst enemy. This was the case Sunday in the Long Beach State menís water polo teamís 9-8 loss to UC Santa Barbara.

The seventh-ranked 49ers (5-5, 1-1) had beaten the No. 9 Gauchos (5-4, 1-1) nine straight times.

"We went up 4-1, and [the 49er players] thought ëthis is going to be an easy gameí and they fell flat on their faces," 49ers Head Coach Ricardo Azevedo said. "When you lose your momentum and allow the other team to get excited, it makes a big difference."

After going up 4-1 midway in the second period, the 49ers let the Gauchos score five unanswered goals through the third period. In the fourth period the teams traded goals, with UCSB going up 9-6 late in the game. Patrick Cochranís two-point goal with 58 seconds left pulled the 49ers within one. LBSU got the ball back with 16 seconds left but was unable to get a good shot.

Azevedo had a long closed-door meeting with his players after the loss. He said he stressed the necessity to concentrate on all the games, not just the big ones, such as tonight's contest with No. 1 UCLA (6-1, 1-0) at 7 at the Belmont Plaza.

Azevedo said some of the 200-plus spectators at the Campus Pool were UCLA players.

"How many times does UCLA come to watch us play," Azevedo said. "In a sense, it's an honor, but the guys were looking past Santa Barbara and seeing what they were going to do against UCLA."

Patrick Cochran led the 49ers with two goals, including the fourth-quarter two pointer. No other 49er scored more than one goal. Kevin Ricks led the Gauchos with three goals.

Tonight's contest against UCLA will be the first meeting between the two teams this year. It will be a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation game.

"UCLA is a very well-trained team with a lot of experience," Azevedo said. "I think they're the most talented team in the country. It should definitely be a fun game."

On Saturday, LBSU traveled to Malibu to take on fellow No. 7 Pepperdine and avenged a one-point loss earlier in the season with a 12-6 win. The 49ers lost 15 straight to the Waves before the victory.

Corey Dolley scored his 16th career two-point goal, giving him the LBSU record. Shane Lindstrom led the 49ers with four goals, while Cochran added three.
