Three women were killed as they changed
a tire on the Long Beach Freeway on Sunday night near the Anaheim Street
off-ramp.
Lauren Dunn, 23, of Avalon, died early
Monday at Long Beachís Saint Mary Medical Center from injuries sustained
in the crash.
The other two victims -- Joanna Wilson,
23, of New London, N. H., and Lauren Entress, of Winchester, Mass. -- died
at the scene.
"They may have been returning from the
island [Catalina] at the time of the accident," said Jana Blair, Long Beach
Police Department spokeswoman.
"Speed is definitely a factor in this accident,
however, alcohol and drugs did not play a role in the crash," Blair said.
The women were changing a tire on the northbound
710 Freeway shoulder when a black Chevrolet Camaro traveling northbound
approached them at a "high rate of speed," police said.
The driver of the Camaro was with two other
people when the collision occurred, police said. The car clipped the rear
of a Chevy Cavalier that was also traveling northbound on the 710 and sent
that car spinning out of control, Blair said.
Ricardo Zamora, 20, of Torrance, was arrested
at the scene and will be arraigned Tuesday at the Long Beach Court House,
police said. He will be charged with either misdemeanor or felony vehicular
manslaughter.
Zamora is being held at Long Beach City
Jail. His bail is set at $50,000.
