Forum will assist graduate studies

After obtaining a bachelorís degree, many students are bewildered by postgraduate life.

Some accept reality and join the workforce; others travel, while some do nothing.  But in ever increasing numbers, students look to continue their education by undertaking post-graduate study.

However, many may not know where to go to find out about which school to attend, what programs are offered and how much it will cost them.

For the first time, Cal State Long Beach will host a Graduate Record Examination Forum at The Pyramid.

"Over 100 graduate schools from across the country will be there. Students can get a name and number" of a representative from a school that interests them, said Henry Fung, dean of graduate studies.

The forum is set up for students to obtain essential information about graduate work and to meet representatives from the schools, he said.

The forum begins at 8:30 a.m. with a workshop on financial aid and admissions.  Other workshops will follow, focusing on GRE test preparation and minorities in education.

Students can then focus on their area of interest with workshops involving academic disciplines, including psychology, history, political science, sociology, education, natural sciences, computer science and engineering.

From 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., students can mingle with school representatives, establish contacts, ask questions and get paperwork.

The GRE forums are held annually at four locations across the country. This event marks not only the first time a GRE forum has been held here, but at any California State University campus.

This way it will be easier for students to afford the cost since they donít have to pay for hotel rooms and other expenses, Fung explained.

The other three 1999 sites are at hotels in New York, Boston and Chicago.  The GRE Forums are among the largest graduate school recruiting fairs held in the United States.

Admission is $5, but the charge is waived for students who present a validated admission ticket. To get a ticket, one may call the Office of Academic Affairs at (562) 985-4128 or drop by Brotman Hall, Room 303.
