Two campus centers have joined forces to
educate Cal State Long Beach students about the dangers of breast cancer
during Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
The Women's Resource Center and the Student
Health Center will offer a variety of resources in order for students to
be knowledgeable about the dangers of breast cancer.
Breast cancer is the No. 1 killer of women,
said Dr. Ming Yu-Cheng, coordinator of the Health Resource Center.
Detecting a cancerous lump in oneís breast
early increases the chances of successful treatment, Cheng said.
Self-breast examinations are a vital tool
for early detection.
"I cannot stress enough how important self
exams are," Cheng said. "Ninety percent of the cases of breast cancer,
the patients find the breast masses themselves."
More often than not, the breast masses,
or lumps, are noncancerous, Cheng said.
"We don't want to frighten everyone. We
just want women to keep an eye on their breasts for their own safety,"
Cheng said.
The Health Center, along with the Womenís
Resource Center will have tables set up throughout the campus with a variety
of materials about breast cancer.
"The tables will be like venders," said
Rosa Hernandez, student assistant to the Student Health Services.
"We will have pink ribbons to hand out,
a shower self exam sheet, and the breast cancer stamp will be available
for students to purchase," she said.
The stamp is 40 cents with seven cents
of the purchase going directly toward breast cancer research, Hernandez
said.
The Women's Resource Center will be hosting
a seminar on Oct. 13, 14, 20 and 21 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The Oct. 13 and 14 seminars will be held
in the Women's Resource Center, and the Oct. 20 and 21 seminars will be
in the Health Resource Center of the Student Health Services.
The lecture and discussion series is designed
to educate women about breast cancer and the resources available to them
for prevention and treatment.
Women will be encouraged to bring their
own lunches and ask any questions about breast cancer that they may have.
Dr. Cheng will give an informational lecture.
"National Breast Cancer month is a national
project," said Lynne Coenen, assistant director to the Women's Resource
Center.
"Working with more than one department
expands the opportunities for students to be proactive with their health
care," she said.
Both centers are seeking volunteers to
assist with the information tables and with the Pink Bag series.
