A Cal State Long Beach student sustained
head injuries on campus after he lost control on his skateboard and collided
into a light pole Thursday afternoon near the East Campus Turnaround.
Ren Chang was heading down East Campus
Drive on his skateboard around 2 p.m. and attempted to go around an access
gate that allows authorized cars to pass through the eastside of the campus,
said Cpl. J. Strickler of the Long Beach Police Department.
An unidentified witness told police Chang
apparently lost his balance when he tried to avoid the gateís crossbar.
Chang then hit the center divider with his skateboard.
"Chang hit the concrete block with his
skateboard, hit the concrete light pole with his head and landed vertical
to the road," Strickler said.
He remained motionless on the street until
CSULB emergency services arrived.
One of the emergency officers tried to
ask Chang questions but he was not responsive.
"[The officer] kept repeating the question
for a while," Strickler said.
The Long Beach Fire Department soon arrived
and officers began treating lacerations on Chang's face.
LBFD Capt. Dave Holden also asked Chang
questions to determine whether he was conscious.
"He hit his head pretty hard and was shook
up but no major damage," Holden said.
Chang sustained several lacerations around
his right eye.
The Long Beach Paramedics was the last
to arrive on the scene.
After bandaging Changís wounds, paramedics
took him to Saint Mary's Hospital.
Chang's condition was described as "satisfactory"
two hours after the incident, according to Dave Sibilsky, a hospital spokesman. |
