Freshman Thomas adds depth to 49er bench

If you follow 49er women's volleyball, you may have noticed the debut of 6-foot-2 freshman Elisha Thomas in last week's conference opener against  Utah State.

In the first game alone, Thomas tallied two kills and one assist.

"It felt so good to wear that uniform, to represent Long Beach," Thomas said.

During the first part of LBSUís season, Thomas trained with the USA Junior National Team at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. The national team recently competed in the Junior World Championships in Saskatoon, Canada.

"She's very talented," LBSU Head Coach Brian Gimmillaro said. "But she's a little behind because she wasnít here during that developmental period."

Furthermore Thomas will be more of a factor in the 49erís success when they become a better ball-control team, he said.

"She's more of a hitter than a ball-control person," Gimmillaro said.
