5 men held for smashing windows

By Kristopher Hanson
Daily Forty-Niner

Five people were arrested in connection with the vandalism of the storefront windows of several businesses in Belmont Shore early Monday, said a Long Beach Police official.

Nathaniel Sterling, 21; Brock Dockery, 22; brothers David, 22, and Jason Daniels, 26; and a 16-year-old were arrested and may face vandalism charges, said Nancy Tabing, spokeswoman for the Long Beach Police Department.

All are residents of Long Beach except for Jason Daniels, whose address is listed in Norwalk.

The men apparently used a slingshot to hurl unknown objects through the large glass windows that dot the business storefronts along East Second Street, Tabing said.

"Officers standing in the area of Second Street and La Verne [Avenue] heard glass breaking and observed the suspect's vehicle as they were driving away," Tabing said. "They were stopped a short time later."

One store manager said she was notified early on the morning of Sept. 22 after one of the front windows of her store, The Gap, had been smashed.

"My district manager called me around 6:30 a.m. and told me," said Erika Wilson, associate manager of the clothing store located at 5025 E. Second St.

She said her store is insured against such incidents, but the cost would likely be expensive to replace such a large window.

Tabing said detectives were still trying to determine if last Wednesdayís incident was related to Mondayís, in which seven businesses were vandalized.

Two of the men are still in custody at the Long Beach City Jail. The other two men have been released on bail. Information on the juvenile was not available.

The group faces arraignment today on felony charges.
