A volunteer teacher for Cal State Long
Beachís Senior University had an out-of-this-world experience this summer.
Trina Dye was chosen to participate in
the annual space camp program sponsored by Boeing in July.
Senior University is a special university
program designed for students age 55 or older.
"The most profound thing I learned was
that astronauts are true heroes [because] their lives are secondary to
the mission," Dye said. "Every time they go up to space, they risk their
lives."
Thirty-five teachers from all over the
world including Japan, Italy, Brazil and Russia, spent 10 days in Huntsville,
Ala., and Houston.
During this 10-day camp, participants
visited sites including mission control and a buoyancy lab.
The purpose of the camp is to educate
teachers about space exploration so that they can take the information
back to the classroom, she said.
"I am more than willing to share my experiences
[at the camp] and materials with people," Dye said.
Dye is also a full-time teacher at the
International Elementary School in Long Beach.
The program required the participants
to learn about space flight, science and history. Classes were held from
7 a.m. to 10 p.m. every day.
The program allowed participants to witness
various training exercises such as an underwater drill.
"[Astronauts] spent six hours under water
training with 200- pound space suits on," Dye said.
One of the participants was a Russian
astronaut who has been to space four times, she said.
"We got talk to him and learned a lot
from him," Dye said. |
