Big Wu comes up short

By Shreya Bhakta
Daily Forty-Niner

Listening to the Big Wuís "Tracking Buffalo Through The Bathtub" is a unique experience.

The band packs the diverse styles of country, jazz and blues into each song.
CD REVIEW: C
This compact disc, however, isn't great. The beats are too similar and some of the  topics don't make sense.

The compact disc started with the song  "Silcanturnito- va."

The lyrics of "I started cookin' in the afternoon, Sil can turn it over by the hazy noonÖSil can turn it over that's the only way" explain how Sill is the highlight of a barbecue party.

The instrumental starts with a slow drumbeat and the lead singer murmuring the words, so it is hard to follow along without looking at the lyric booklet.

Luckily, "Silcanturnitova," does get faster with its bass and guitar.

Other songs such as "Kangaroo," "Bloodhound," "Midnight Rudy," and ìGimme a Raise,î are also about a particular person as well as animals.

"Kangaroo" and "Bloodhound" are about a kangaroo and a hunting dog, respectively, with upbeat, jazzy beats.

"Kangaroo" begins with an interesting guitar beat that reminds one of the Siskel and Ebert movie review show. It is a short song about owning a kangaroo and has a lot of guitar and keyboard sounds.

"Bloodhound" is about a dog and his hunting journey. The lyrics of "He dives below the powder wire, chasing the rhythm of a heartbeat through the heat of the fire Ö tracks in the mud of a hunter's shoe tracking a trophy," is about the dogís ability to smell blood for the kill.

"Midnight Rudy" and "Gimme a Raise" are songs about people.
Both are low key and mellow.

When the lead singer makes a point in the song the beats would switch from calm and strong.

"Midnight Rudy" talks about a pimp: ìLook at Mr. Rudy selliní what he got groovin' Ö wallet fat and friendly and he's smellin' good, rolling in his stolen Chevrolet."

"Gimme a Raise" demands to bosses that workers need a raise, a week off for a holiday and a promotion.

"Tracking Buffalo Through The Bathtub," despite not having the best sounds, overall has a jazzy mellow beat that is listenable when relaxing after a long day at school.
