LBSU out of tune
Want an identity, have a song.
This university needs one, especially since
the school is commemorating its 50 years of existence on Nov. 11.

A song that makes one proud to be a 49er
and that we can hum on the way to the big game, event or ceremony.
"Go Big Blue" at the University of Michigan,
"On Wisconsin" on the Wisconsin University campus at Madison and "The Rouser"
at the University of Minnesota are all synonymous with their schools.
The slogan around this campus seems to
be "Go Beach." We hear it from President Robert Maxson at pep-rallies and
we see it pasted at the end of his column, which runs in this very paper.
So be it. "Go Beach" should be the title
of a song that represents LBSU.
In fact, there is a pep band on campus.
It is made-up of a few volunteers led by Don Para, head of the music department.
That is school spirit.
The athletic department created a school
mascot with built in hydraulic capabilities named "Prospector Pete."
Couldn't "Pete" use a tune to groove to?
Just start small, and hammer out a little
tune with a few easy chorus lines? Something we can learn easilyÖGo Beach,
Go BeachÖ.
Perhaps what I am asking for is too much?
With LBSU hosting the upcoming menís volleyball
Final Four tournament in 2001, the campus musicians have plenty of time
to write something. If they canít get it done before the 50th anniversary,
perhaps they can have something to perform musically by the start of the
millennium.
As a senior with an anticipated graduation
date arriving next May, I want my school song played when I walk up on
stage and shake President Maxsonís hand and grab that diploma.
Isn't this what going to college is all
about?
If I canít have a football team, darn it,
I want something I can rah-rah-about. Even if it is at a volleyball or
basketball game.
