The Long Beach State menís water polo team
reached the .500 mark on Sunday by defeating No. 9 UC Santa Barbara in
a non-conference match 12-7.
After being tied 5-5 at halftime, the 49ers
(4-4) took control in the third period.
This was the teamís ninth consecutive win
against UCSB, and 11th of the last 12, dating back to 1996.
Senior Patrick Cochran and sophomore Chris
Segesman had three goals each against the Gauchos (3-4). UCSB scored only
two goals in the second half.
On Saturday, the 49ers rolled over Division
III Occidental 24-3 at the Campus Pool.
The 49ers' starting players played only
parts of two periods in the route.
Sophomore Chris Segesman scored three goals,
including a pair of two-pointers, to lead the 49ers. Senior Shane Lindstrom
contributed four goals and senior Corey Dolley scored three.
For 49er Head Coach Ricardo Azevedo, this
game gave the team a chance to refine its skills.
"The guys are starting to learn the offense,"
Azevedo said. "Now they just need to learn how to execute it. I think they
did a good job with that today."
One strategy the 49ers tried against the
Gauchos was a "shadow offense," which is when a team keeps fewer players
in the defen1sive zone while the other team has possession. Two players
stay in their own offensive zone and are ready to score when the other
team turns over the ball.
The 49ers face the Gauchos again next Sunday
afternoon at the Campus Pool.
The 49ers take on No. 6 Pepperdine Saturday
at 5 p.m. at the Belmont Plaza Pool. |
