President takes stand on credit cards
Dear 49ers:
Students have been expressing concern about
the increasing numbers of individuals not connected with the university
who spend time on campus, often engaging in repeated and annoying requests
for money or signatures.
You do not have to give money or sign petitions.
These people do not represent the university. Because the campus is a public
place, there are limits on the control we have on these activities.
As in any situation, if students are being
harassed, it should be reported so appropriate actions could be taken.
A good contact person is Sgt. Bonnie Myers,
whose office is on the second floor of the University Student union. I
have always treated our students as adults, but I am also very protective
of them.
It is important to remember that itís
the universityís goal to provide the most comprehensive and supportive
environment for students. To accomplish this, it is necessary to have a
full range of support activities and services so students are able to take
care of business while on campus.
Students regularly tell me that the vendor
operations you see set up around the University Bookstore and the University
Dining Plaza provide not only products at reasonable prices, but they also
bring a positive element and a pleasurable shopping convenience to campus
life.
While Associated Students Inc. is supportive
of these vendors, it has expressed concern about the marketing strategies
used by some of the credit card companies on our campus. The Student Senate
has formed a committee to address this issue.
Credit cards are convenient aspect of the
modern economy. They have important utility because they allow for financial
planning and flexibility. As with almost anything that is a convenience
in modern life, credit cards can also present a dilemma as they enable
one to spend more than he can afford to pay.
I want to commend Sheryl Mauricio and our
Student Senate for addressing this important issue. Again, I know
you are adults, but I really care about our students. I only want good
things to happen to you on this campus.
Go Beach!
Sincerely,
Robert C. Maxson
