Friends of the late Stanley Maerowitz,
a computer repair specialist for the College of Liberal Arts, held a memorial
service Thursday at the Academic Senate.
Maerowitz died Sept. 5 at age 56.
More than 60 people turned out for the
service, laughing and sometimes sighing as friends and colleagues shared
their memories.
A table containing photos, a tin filled
with jellybeans and a Macintosh computer sat at the entrance.
Next to the table was a desk chair with
an old computer on it, a symbol, friends said, of Maerowitzís personality.
"He used to stack his work on the chairs,"
said David Griffin, who worked with Maerowitz at technical services for
more than three years. "We'd tell him, 'Stan, we've got nowhere to sit.'"
Among those in attendance were professors,
colleagues and Maerowitzís wife and two grown children.
Maerowitz, who had suffered a heart attack
seven years ago, had worked at the Cal State Long Beach since 1986.
People who knew and loved Maerowitz took
their turns speaking to the crowd, sharing their memories.
They described him as a man with an appetite
for good food and an appetite for life.
"He was not shy, nor retiring," said Bill
Grissom, technical support services manager for the college and long-time
friend. "When he came to help someone, you got more than just computer
help. He just loved to talk to people."
"After working together for such a long
time, we became like a family." Grissom said. |
