The Long Beach State men's water polo team
looks to rebound from the tough Southern California Tournament where it
lost three out of four games against some of the best teams in the nation.
The 49ers will be looking for their third
win of the season Saturday afternoon when it meets Division III Occidental
College at the Campus Pool. The 49ers have a 2-4 record.
Head Coach Ricardo Azevedo said he does
not expect the same level of competition from Occidental that the 49ers
have seen recently.
"This is a game where we get to work on
a lot of things," Azevedo said.
The 49ers travel Sunday to UC Santa Barbara
to take on the No. 5 Gauchos (3-2). LBSU is tied for the fifth spot in
the USA Water Polo collegiate rankings as of Sept. 15.
"[UCSB is] a pretty quick team, with strong
outside shooters," Azevedo said.
Sunday's game will be a non-conference
match, but Azevedo said he wants a good showing against them, preferably
a win.
This will be the first meeting between
the two teams this season. They will meet again Oct. 3 at the Campus Pool
in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation contest.
After being relatively quiet during its
first week of seasonal play against Loyola Marymount and USC, senior Corey
Dolley picked up his scoring last weekend with six goals in four games,
including two 2-point goals.
Dolley is the highest returning scorer
from last yearís squad, with 40 points, including 12 two-point goals.
He now has 15 career two-point goals and
is tied for the team record with former 49er Chi Kredell. |
