Long Beach State women's soccer Head Coach
Julie Cochran insists her team can perform despite a 2-5 record.
"[The record] really isnít really reflective
of how we play," she said.
The team will test its luck Friday night
when it travels to Las Vegas to take on the University of Nevada-Las Vegas.
UNLV, led by Head Coach Staci Hendershott,
are 2-3-1. The Rebels, like the 49ers, started its womenís soccer program
a year ago, going 8-10-1. This will be the first time the teams
have met.
The 49ers return home Sunday to take on
Fresno State at 1 p.m. Cochranís coaching mentor Peter Reynaud will lead
the 6-3 Bulldogs. Fresno Stateís victories have included wins over No.
13 James Madison, Utah State and Mississippi.
Cochran said she feels good about her teamís
chances despite her team facing two tough opponents,
"Our game has improved so much in terms
of our style of play," Cochran said. "We're playing tougher, more competitive
teams this year. So, this weekend I really want to score."
Last weekend, the womenís soccer team traveled
to Stockton to play at the Pacific Collegiate Soccer Showcase.
On Friday night, the 49ers faced the University
of Pacific and were shut out 4-0.
The 49ers started off relatively slow while
the Tigers started off quickly. Pacific forward Jamee Lucchesi scored an
unassisted goal during the first six minutes of play.
In the second half, the Pacific Tigers
prowled and growled their way to three more goals.
Lucchesi scored her second goal of the
night to start the second-half scoring barrage. She scored four minutes
into the second half, assisted by Tiger middle forwards Brooke Kentera
and Mariah Metras.
LBSU goalie Jihan Elgazzar lowered her
goals-against average to 2.30 by responding to shut out Idaho State 1-0,
Sunday. |
