The sound of Latin jazz and the aroma of
freshly prepared enchiladas filled the air in the Multicultural Center
Conference Room, on Tuesday, when the Chicano and Latino studies department
hosted a mixer introducing new students to the department and faculty.
"The idea of the celebration is to let
students have a good time in an atmosphere where people feel welcome to
the department," said Dr. Luis L. Arroyo, professor and chair of the department.
This was also a chance for students to meet professors, he added.
One professor of the department, Enrique
Rios, and his Latin jazz band, which does not yet have an official name,
played music throughout the event.
Students and faculty talked amongst one
another, ate Mexican cuisine, prepared Super Mex Restaurant, and listened
to the bandís instrumentals.
"The music itself is great - it's nice
to see Latin music on campus," said Delia Castillo, a senior majoring in
music and taking a Chicano and Latino studies literature course this semester.
Each of the six faculty members present,
at the time of Arroyís formal welcome speech, were acknowledged individually
and received unanimous applause from the audience.
Federico A. Sanchez, founding faculty of
the Chicano and Latino studies department at Cal State Long Beach, was
acknowledged at this time as well.
Sanchez, along with the rest of the department,
is also celebrating the 30th anniversary of the Chicano and Latino studies
department at CSULB this year. |
