Injuries hamper 49ers

After dropping to No. 5 following last week's loss against Hawaii, the 49ers will play their first conference match against unranked Utah State on Thursday, 7:30 p.m. at The Pyramid.

However, the 49ers will be without senior outside hitter Veronica Walls against Utah State, who is recovering from a viral infection.

Wall may also be out for Saturday's televised game against No. 1 ranked Pacific. Her doctor recommended bed rest for the infection, said LBSU Head Coach Brian Gimmillaro.

Also questionable for Thursday's game is sophomore setter Keri Nishimoto, who is rehabilitating a sprained ankle.

Nishimoto said it's up to Gimmillaro if she plays tonight.

"I'm not jumping full height," Nishimoto said.  "I canít go 100 percent for some balls....[but] If he puts me in, Iíll be ready to play."

Gimmillaro acknowledged the challenge.

"I know they'll [Pacific] have the biggest crowd of the year," Gimmillaro said. ěItíll be big and hostile."
