'Dirty' teacher may be fired

Cal State Long Beach professor Elena Zagustin may soon be out of a job, said Ken Swisher, California State University spokesman.

"A notice of termination will soon be filed [and sent to her] in the next couple of days," Swisher said. "Zagustin has 14 days to appeal."

Last week, the university issued a failure-to-appear notice to the engineering professor after she failed to show up to teach class for five consecutive days without notice, Swisher said.

Her absence stems from a $50,000 bench warrant she received after failure to appear in a Westminster court Sept. 8.

Zagustin, who is currently a fugitive from the law, was given five days to respond. However, she failed to contact the university after that time, Swisher said.

As a result, the university issued the termination notice, Swisher said.

Zagustin, who was convicted of 69 counts of health and safety code violations for an unsanitary home, disappeared after she failed to show up for a scheduled probation violation appearance.

The university does not know the whereabouts of Zagustin, Swisher said.

"She may be in Las Vegas," said Lt. Gary Tackett of West Orange County Marshallís office. "[Zagustin] has some interest in Nevada."

Police believe she may be hiding out in Las Vegas because she filed a bankruptcy in Nevada before, Tackett said.

Detectives have added Zagustin to a "com cast" list, which airs on cable access television. Police hope this will help the search.

"We worked all the leads in Orange County, and we still have not found her," Tackett said.

The officer in charge of Zagustin's warrant was not available for comment.
