KBEACH offers easy-listening cuisine

He calls it "eating music" -- a variety
of easy-to-digest tunes piped in through the public announcement system
of the University Student Union at lunchtime.
This is KBEACH Radio and Ryan Disch is
your host Mondays at noon.
Disch calls his selection of music the
"cruiser mix" -- everything from 311 to Bob Marley to Pennywise.
"My main listening audience is in the second
floor bathroom next to the candy counter because the PA system is loud
there," Disch said jokingly.
"It's pretty cool," said sophomore Monica
Guzman, who works at the candy counter in the Student Union. "We can place
requests and theyíll get played immediately."
KBEACH is a radio station that broadcasts
live shows daily through the PA system of the Student Union and over the
Internet as well. The station is self-sufficient and all personnel are
volunteers, including the disc jockeys.
The station airs five to six shows daily,
each show lasting about two hours. Every program is completely unique,
reflecting the style and taste of the host.
"It's an eclectic collection which represents
the DJs here," said KBEACH Music Director Candy Simpkins.
An automated system randomly picks songs
from a collection of almost 400 singles on the off-hours, overnight between
11 p.m. and 11 a.m., allowing the station to run 24 hours.
The fall line-up of shows offers a very
different approach to radio programming. If itís heard on mainstream radio,
it probably won't be KBEACH.
Simpkins, known as DJ Candy, also hosts
a Wednesday show from 11 a.m. to noon called ìPhantasmagorical.î The music
can be described as modern rock, so why the unusual name?
"She's just being goofy because we can
be," said KBEACH General Manager Mike Soultanian. "It makes people think."
Simpkins's show starts off the day at
11 a.m. and from noon to 2 p.m. Kitty and Candy talk Buffy the Vampire
Slayer during "The Succumbus Club." Big Al and Tommy take over from 2 to
4 p.m. hosting "Wipe Out," playing surf music.
Last month, the station brought listeners
live coverage of the California Sun and Surf International Soccer Tournament,
one of the largest tournaments in the nation with just under 300 teams
competing.
Students from every major are invited
to participate in KBEACH Radio. Although this Saturdayís training session
is full, another session is planned for next month. Interested students
may contact the station at (562) 985-1624 for details.
Music requests can be made to the on-air
host by calling (562) 985-2282.
