Team has ups, downs at meet

By Andres Cardenas

While the Long Beach State men's cross-country team season is beginning to soar, the womenís season is grounded -- for now.

LBSU cross country Head Coach Andy Sythe lost one of his best female runners, senior Bree Frigo, last week due to a stress fracture in her foot. Frigo will be gone  another five weeks.

Sythe said the time off could be beneficial for Frigo.

"It is going to give her an opportunity to become stronger mentally and physically because of the type of person she is," Sythe said.

The women's team ran without Frigo at the Aztec Invitational, hosted by San Diego State on Saturday.

They finished ninth out of 11 teams with a team score of 215 points.

Arizona won the invitational with a score of 37 points.

The overall winner was Tara Chapin of Arizona with a time of 17 minutes, 21 seconds.

Monica MacManus turned in the lone positive performance Sythe said.

She ran a  personal best of 18 minutes, 35 seconds on a rugged Balboa Park course.

"She ran a solid first mile," Sythe said about MacManus. "She has constantly moved up 30 seconds to a minute."

Arizona won the menís division with a team score of 19 points.

The overall winner of the race was Micheil Jones of Arizona with a time of 25 minutes, 4 seconds.

The LBSU men's team finished fourth with a team score of 109.

According to Sythe, Johann Appell and Larry Henderson both ěran a smart executed race."

Sythe is hoping the men's team can tighten its spacing between the first and fifth runners that cross the finish line.

The gap was 1 minute, 28 seconds. Sythe said he would like to see that drop to one minute.

The team must improve on focus and self confidence, Sythe said.

The 49ers' next race will be at the Stanford Invitational on  Oct. 2.
