Two political science students at Cal State
Long Beach are making their way to Capitol Hill where they will spend this
semester working under members of the House of Representatives.
Senior Flavio Acosta and junior Shannon
Houselog are among 16 students from the California State University system
selected to participate in an internship program offered by The Leon and
Slyvia Panetta Institute for Public Policy.
Leon Panetta was the Chief of Staff for
the Clinton Administration for three years. The institute, established
in 1998 at CSU Monterey Bay, recruits, trains and prepares individuals
for a professional career in public policy by exposing them to the real
world of politics.
The internship program is the first of
its kind for the institute.
"I knew this was a wonderful opportunity
I really couldnít turn down," Acosta said. "If I did turn it down, I might
regret it later."
This internship program will start with
a two-week orientation course at the institute in CSUMB. The students are
then given a three-month assignment at a California congressmanís office.
"I am a little bit nervous," Houselog
said. " But, this is an opportunity you get only once in a life, and you
have to go through it."
Both Acosta and Houselog believe the experience
in Washington D.C. will be a valuable asset for their future.
"I have considered a career in politics
[such as] in campaign management or as an elected official at the state
or national level," Acosta said.
"I expect to gain some valuable experience
at Washington D.C. to view how public policy and legislation are enacted,"
Houselog said. |
