Credit card probe may be sparked

Although credit card companies will
continue to find a place at Cal State Long Beach, a proposed resolution
to limit vendors has prompted the Associated Students Inc. Senate to form
a committee to further examine the issue.
The resolution, written by Sen. Becky
Roberts of the College of Natural Science and Mathematics, would attempt
to limit credit card vendors on campus.
Debt management information would also
be handed out to the students along with the credit card applications.
At the meeting, CSULB President Robert
Maxson advised the Senate to form the committee, which will make recommendations
to his office on the matter.
"We don't want to do anything on this
campus that would hurt the students," he said.
Because CSULB is a public university,
Maxson said he could not force vendors to stop setting up shop on campus.
However, he strongly believes that if
students feel harassed by credit card companies, they should report the
vendors to University Police.
Also discussed at Senate meeting was the
pending concert to feature Rage Against the Machine at The Pyramid.
Speaking on behalf of A. S. I. President
Toby Sexton, A.S.I. Administrator Robert Garcia said the bid for the band,
has not been accepted or rejected.
The A.S.I. will pursue another band if
Rage Against the Machine does not respond to the bid by 5 p.m. on Friday,
Sept. 17, he said.
The punk band Blink 182 may take their
place, according to Garcia. |
