Students were treated to the smooth jazz
music of Bobby Matos & His Afro Latin Jazz Ensemble on Thursday.
The band was greeted by loud applause
from an enthusiastic audience of about 60 people after each song at the
University Student Union South Plaza.
"I like their sound, it makes me feel
like Rumba dancing!" said George Olarte, a junior majoring in graphic design.
The only negative aspect about the performance
was the sound system.
The band could barely be heard past the
plaza's main stairs.
It didn't help that a radio station nearby
was playing music loudly.
However, this did not prevent the audience
from enjoying the music.
"[The band makes] a beautiful combination,"
said Victor Avila, a salesman from Long Beach.
The music had a calming effect on the
audience, which was a sea of serene faces.
The soft beating of the piano, the raging
congas and timbales combined with the upright bass seemed to take the audience
members to other places.
"It reminded me of the Caribbean; Calypso
style music," said sophomore Sarina Steinbarth, an international politics
and economics major.
Bobby Matos & His Afro Latin Jazz
Ensemble have been around for almost a decade according to timbales player
Bobby Matos.
The band is composed of Matos, Robertito
Melendez on congas, Victor Cegarra on piano and John B. Williams on the
bass.
The group has a new album out called "Live
at the M.O.C.A." on the Cubop label. |
