Best of the West face-off at USC

By Tom Harshbarger

It just doesnít get any easier for the Long Beach State menís water polo team. The 49ers will be facing the best teams the NCAA has to offer this Saturday and Sunday.

WATER POLO

The Beach will be one of 13 teams participating the Southern California Tournament at the McDonalds Swim Stadium at USC.

"It's a good competition," LBSU Head Coach Ricardo Azevedo said. "It's the first time all the teams (in the conference) will get to see each other in a tournament format."

All nine Mountain Pacific Sports Federation teams, which hold the top nine spots in the rankings, will play this weekend. The 49ers are ranked No. 7 and host USC is ranked number one in the nation.

"We're looking forward to seeing some of these other teams," Azevedo said.

The 49ers first match will be at 8:05 a.m. Saturday against No. 10 ranked UC San Diego. Azevedo said he expects UCSD to be a very tough opponent.

"They're fast, and theyíre a veteran team," Azevedo said. "They can do a lot of different things and have good size."

After the 49ers finish playing UCSD, their day is by no means over. At 12:25 p.m., they will then take on the No. 2 Stanford Cardinal.

"They probably use the counterattack more than anybody else in the country."

Each team in the tournament is guaranteed to play four games this weekend. The results from Saturdayís matches will determine who plays who on Sunday.

Also appearing in the tournament will be No. 14 ranked Air Force and No. 15 Navy. They are the only teams from outside of the state, with Navy traveling all the way from Annapolis, Md. to participate.

It's conceivable that LBSU will get a rematch against the Trojans on Sunday. Last Friday USC barely squeaked by the 49ers with mere seconds left on the clock.

Azevedo said the close game times will not be a problem for his team and said they train four hours a day and are in excellent shape.

"Everybody's in the same situation," he said. "Stanford will be fresh when we see them, but I donít think it'll be a problem."
