Coach Gimmillaro looking forward to challenge

One shining team will lose their brilliant streak tonight.

Undefeated and No. 4 ranked Long Beach State takes on undefeated, No. 3 Hawaii in what may be the most challenging match for the 49ers since the NCAA championship against Penn State last year.

"All they (Hawaii) want to talk about is ending our streak," LBSU Head Coach Brian Gimmillaro said.

Besides riding a seasonal win streak, the 49ers are two games away from breaking an all-time consecutive win record after last seasonís perfect 36-0 record. The 49ers are riding a 42 game win streak. The record is 44 wins, set by Penn State.

Gimmillaro, however, said he is unsure if sophomore setter Keri Nishimoto will play in the match against Hawaii. Nishimoto sprained her ankle during a match against the USC Trojans two weeks ago.

"She was OK Monday," Gimmillaro said. "She didnít go 100 percent, but she did practice."

LBSU is ranked just under the Wahine with a record of 6-0. Hawaii is 7-0, after Sundayís win over Nevada.

Tonight's sold out match in Honolulu has received a lot of publicity, Gimmillaro said. A crowd of more than 10,500 is expected to attend the match.

"It's the biggest game of the year, they talk about it every day," Gimmillaro said. "It's been the top conversation since itís been scheduled last year."

Honolulu will be the site for this yearís NCAA Final Four tournament. Gimmillaro said it will be a good experience for the team to familiarize themselves with Hawaiiís court.

"It's important for us to play at the venue," he said.

LBSU and Hawaii both won tournaments that they hosted when the season began.

The 49ers shut out their competitors by winning three games two weeks ago in the LBSU volleyball tournament. Hawaii took the Astonís Imua Wahine Challenge title over the weekend, finishing the tournament with three wins as well.

The 49ers closest call to defeat came when they lost their first game to the USC Trojans two weeks ago, but came back to win the match after five games (12-15, 15-13, 13-15, 15-10, 15-7).

Hawaii defeated USC in only four games last Friday (15-12, 10-15, 16-14, 15-10).

The match will be televised live on University Television (Channel 60 or 68 in Long Beach/Channel 25 in Lakewood) at 10 p.m. LBSU will play Colorado Saturday night in Hawaii though it will not be televised.

Fast Break

Preseason track practice got off to a fast start in the shadow of The Pyramid Tuesday as team members work on sprints for the upcoming Spring season.
