Students mingle with employers

Cal State Long Beach students had the opportunity
to mingle with more than 100 employers offering job opportunities at Career
Day 1999 held near Brotman Hall on Wednesday.
Jake Stead, a CSULB art major, said he
feels meeting with possible employers on campus is an advantage others
do not have.
"There are a lot of jobs out there, but
this event makes it a lot easier to get at them," Stead said.
Robert Wendt, a career counselor at CSULB,
said he believes job opportunities have been on the rise as a result of
a good economy in California.
"We see a lot of opportunities for engineering
and business majors," he said.
Most of the companies encouraged students
from all majors to apply for positions.
"I think there are a lot of leads here
-- it [the fair] makes it really convenient to find a good job," said Laura
Cicero, an anthropology major. "I was just coming from the parking lot
to class and now I have three applications in my hand."
One of the companies at the event was
Northrop
Grumman, an aerospace and defense company.
The business is reorganizing itself so
it is "not strictly focused on defense contracts," said Sherrice Adams,
Northrop's employment representative.
Northrop is now looking to fill human resources,
engineering and computer science positions.
"We do extremely well [at these functions],"
Adams said.
Most company representatives were looking
for students with not only good grades but also interests outside of academics.
Wendt encourages students to submit resumes
to the Career Development Center's electronic database, which allows employers
to browse through the resumes of students on campus and offer them jobs. |
