Campus moms get support

The student mother tackles a variety of
obstacles. She must be a caring and involved mother, find the proper childcare,
get to class, find time to study, possibly work, and least of all, make
sure she does not go insane trying to do so.
"Campus moms have a multitasking problem,"
said Lynne Coenen, assistant director of the Womenís Resource Center. "They
take on so much and expect so much of themselves that when midterms come
along they are crunched."
To address the unending tension many student
mothers face, the center is starting a support group specifically for moms
on campus. The group will meet once a week in the center and will be an
open forum for women to discuss problems and offer solutions.
"Where one woman may be having difficulty,
another may have a solution for the problem," Coenen said. "Pooling our
talents and working with each other to make things easier will be the main
goal of this group."
The group will establish play groups for
children, cooperative babysitting and time-management strategies, and most
importantly, mothers will be able to share their experiences and help one
another cope.
"Many women experience guilt for being
a student and a mother," Coenen said. "They see mothers who have careers
and feel that they are not contributing to the family finances because
they are students."
The first meeting of the group will be
Thursday at noon in the center, in LA3-105. Those who attend are encouraged
to bring a bag lunch and any ideas about a focus for group discussion.
Children are welcome for those who cannot find childcare.
The center has not set a specific time
for future meetings.
