Cal State Long Beach job seekers may find help at the Career Transition Center and the Long Beach Civil Service Department, both located in downtown Long Beach.

While the center deals with all kinds of jobs, the department deals with positions related to the city of Long Beach.

The center offers services such as assistance in job search, self-screening for eligibility in specific openings and referral to other resources throughout Long Beach.

It also offers services for employers such as access to job-seeker listings, assessments of workersí skills and training for new and current employees.

Health science major Raul Sobero said the job center could help any student.

"In the very first day, I got an interview and I got hired," said Sobero, who now works as supervisor for Orange County Breast Cancer Partnership. "I truly believe in visiting an employment office."

Criminal justice major Laura Narimatsu agrees.

"If they weren't helpful, they wouldn't exist," said Narimatsu, who plans to apply to government agencies after graduating from CSULB.

Affiliated only with Long Beach, the department offers positions for those interested in working as police officers, animal control officers, environmental health specialists, and public health nutritionists among other jobs.

Candidates for city jobs, according to the department, must pass four steps: application screening, which reviews experience; training and education; written examination and interview, which evaluate knowledge and skills for the job; and a performance test, which requires demonstration of ability for the job.

The Career Transition Center is located at 3447 Atlantic Ave. and is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. For further information, one may call (562) 570-3700.

The Long Beach Civil Service Department is located at 333 W. Ocean Blvd., 7th floor, and is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

For current openings, one may call the 24-hour job line (562) 570-6201 or (562) 570-6308.
