While you were gone ... The summer's top stories:

News

  • The Long Beach Mall closed Aug. 15 and will be remodeled. When the 17-year-old mall underwent foreclosure June 22, the Hopkins Real Estate Group took charge of the property.
  • California State University campuses are some of the nation's most diverse colleges, according to a recent report in a publication tracking minority issues. Black Issues in Higher Education reported that 10 CSU campuses are among the nation's top 30 universities in giving minorities bachelor's degrees.
  • A beginner-level class on the Korean language and culture will be offered for the first time this fall at Cal State Long Beach. The class was opened after the Korean Business and Economics Student Association gathered 360 petitions to show student interest in the course.
  • A three-year labor contract for California State University faculty was approved by the Board of Trustees. The deal followed more than a year of bickering between the CSU administration and California Faculty Association, the union representing 20,000 professors, lecturers, librarians, coaches and counselors. The deal gives faculty across-the-board raises of 3 percent and allows them to grab up to 12.9 percent under merit pay.

Diversions and sports

  • Robots with axes and hammers bashed one another to robotic bits Aug. 15 in The Pyramid during the first Battlebots competition. The two-day battle featured more than 70 remote-controlled robots.
  • Casts from two MTV reality shows, ìThe Real Worldî and ìRoad Rules,î hung out in the University Student Union July 26  to discuss alcoholism, substance abuse, HIV, studying abroad and volunteerism. The event, part of a nationwide college, featured video clips from the two shows and panel discussions with the casts and 500 attendees.
  • Three 49er baseball players were drafted to the major leagues. The Houston Astros picked up lefty pitcher Mike Gallo, the Arizona Diamondbacks selected relief pitcher Jeremy Ward, and the Seattle Mariners scooped up outfielder Terrmel Sledge.
  • Two Long Beach State coaches' contracts were renewed. Women's basketball Head Coach Dallas Boychuck signed a three-year deal, with baseball Head Coach Dave Snow signing a five-year contract.
