School starts later

Students finding
it hard to get going for the new semester can take a minute and be grateful
that the fall semester is starting a week later than last year.
In the fall of 1998,
the first day of class began Aug. 24. This fall, students had until Aug.
30 to enjoy those last days of summer.
"It was no great
conspiracy," said Kathy Smally, planning and operations analyst for Cal
State Long Beach's Scheduling office.
"We had a certain
amount of teaching and staff days we have to fulfill and make sure that
the summer session does not overlap into fall."
With summer classes
ending Aug. 20, that leaves students attending the third session barely
a week to enjoy their vacation.
"It was a trade off,"
Smally said, "because we had an extra week for [winter] break."
Some colleges, such
as Cal State Fullerton and most community colleges, started the fall term
last week or even earlier. |
