President welcomes students

Dear 49ers,

Welcome to The Beach!

For those of you joining our campus for the first time, I wish to congratulate you for selecting Cal State Long Beach as your university. This is a wonderfully exciting campus of about 30,000 students, and I know you are going to love it here. During my daily walks around the campus, I would be delighted if you would take a moment to introduce yourself.

I hope all of you had a great summer and are looking forward to the new academic year. We are thrilled that CSULB is your university of choice.

More than 300 California valedictorians and National Merit scholars are studying on this campus as President's Scholars. More than 95 percent of this fall's freshmen are full-time students. Our residence halls are filled to capacity, with more than 400 students on the waiting list.

During your free time, I hope you will take the time to learn about our campus. One fun way to do this is to take advantage of the artistic and athletic events offered throughout the academic year.

During the next couple of months, several intercollegiate events are scheduled, including events for women's soccer, women's volleyball, men's golf, men's water polo, cross country and women's golf. I attend all of these competitions and hope to meet you at one of these venues on campus.

I would also encourage you to participate in the wonderful activities scheduled in the University Student Union.

I am proud to serve as your president and know that you will be very proud of the education and the life-long friendships that will begin at The Beach. The faculty and staff want to ensure that you enjoy your university experience, and they will work hard to help you achieve success in your academic goals.

Have a great fall semester, and ...

Go Beach!
