At this time last
year, the Long Beach State women's soccer team just wanted to compete in
NCAA soccer.
Now, with one year
under its belts, the team is looking towards bigger and brighter things.
Head coach Julie
Cochran said after many "firsts" last season, including the team's first
victory Sept. 4, 1998 against Cal State Dominguez Hills, the team will
be looking for its first winning season this year.
"We have a lot more
depth,î she said. ìAnd we have more people working on the
staff this year."
Last season the team
came within one game of posting a .500 record, ending the season at 9-11.
"We've improved individually
at each position," Cochran said.
However, the
goalkeeper position has had problems.
Last year's starter
Michaeli Ramage, who won the Coach's Award, has graduated, and this year's
projected starter Hannah Cochrun will be out for the first few games nursing
a broken bone in her hand.
The starter for the
team's first game against the University of San Diego, Jihan Elgazzar,
is still recovering from an injury she suffered a year ago.
But even with the
injuries at goalkeeper, Cochran said this year's team should be more prepared
than last year's team.
Sophomore forward
Kelli Barrett, the team's MVP from a year ago, will lead a cast of young
newcomers that Cochran said are ready to contribute.
Cochran said sophomore
midfielder Marisa Barragan, who transferred from Sacramento State, should
be a major contributor to this year's squad. She has also been impressed
with freshman midfielder Sarah Aguilar and freshman defender Becky Ricci.
Cochran said, although
the coaching staff and the team have more experience, it will a difficult
season because of a tougher schedule.
The team has added
San Diego State, Brigham Young and Utah to its schedule this year. When
the LBSU women's soccer team takes the field Wednesday against No. 13 San
Diego State, it will mark the first time the team has faced a nationally
ranked opponent. |
