Though enrollment
may be soaring like a phoenix on the eve of Cal State Long Beach's birthday,
about a decade ago student enrollment was skyrocketing toward outer space.
In 1988, enrollment
was more than 30,000, with enrollment this semester being about 28,000,
according to university officials.
The tidbit is just
one of the many details faculty and others have reflected on as the university
celebrates its 50th birthday.
To celebrate the
anniversary, CSULB alumni, faculty, staff and community members have gathered
for numerous university events. So far, CSULB has held luncheons, speeches
and arts festivals.
This semester CSULB
will hold a faculty recognition program, a faculty luncheon and a six-day
Long Beach community project.
"It [50th anniversary
celebration] is a time for people to come and see old friends and chit
chat Ö [and] to see where we [alumni] were then and see where we are
now," said James Townsell, alumnus of black studies.
Top officials such
as U.S. Rep. Steve Horn, R-38th District, have even showed up to the CSULB
celebrations.
"I've seen a lot
of old friends," said Horn, also a former CSULB president. "It [50th anniversary
celebration] is a landmark in the evolution of the university." |
