University Library has many resources for finding information available
to CSULB students and a number of services available to the community.
"Students should
take advantage of the libraryís services because they make the work of
finding and using information easier," said Associate Dean Henry Dubois.
The first place students
can start is the information desk located at the front of the library near
the entrance. It provides information about library hours, location of
different materials, library and campus information, assistance using COAST,
the online catalog and finding out if the library has a certain book or
journal.
"The library at CSULB
is a leader and innovator in introducing new services that benefit students,"
Dubois said.
The Instruction Office,
upon request, gives guided tours of the library. Students visit the reference
center, media and reserve services, serials and the library computing lab.
Demonstrations of COAST are available. The tours are open to both campus
groups and off-campus community groups. Those interested can call the Instruction
Office to schedule a tour.
The University Library
along with the University 100 program give students a self-instructed guide
to using the Libraryís resources. Students in the University 100 class
are given an assignment to be completed and returned to the Instruction
Office. All U100 students must receive credit for the assignment. The Library
component and the class grade are combined for credit or no credit.
Internet workshops
are available free of charge to students. They provide basic and advanced
instruction on how to use the Internet for research. No sign-ups are needed
but it is first come, first serve. The limit is 15 students, according
to the university library.
Other workshops include
the Adult Learnerís Library Orientation which provides re-entering students
with information about COAST, Link+, electronic resources and the Library
home page.
Library Research
is another workshop available which aids students in finding the proper
resources to complete their term papers, Dubois said.
The Finding Full-Text
Scholarly Journals Online workshop gives an introduction to identifying,
marking and downloading full text online journals available at CSULB or
from home, he added.
"I believe that the
legacy of our library is undiminished when one considers initiatives like
our Link+ consortium, electronic reference network and powerful new online
catalog," Dubois said.
COAST is the library
catalog which gives students information on what items the library owns
and where to find them. Students can search for items such as books, periodicals
and journals, media sources, government documents, microforms, and rare
materials. Students can view their library record and renew books on COAST
after establishing a library PIN number. COAST is available to anyone regardless
of campus affiliation and no authorizations or passwords are needed. It
can be found at http://www.coast.csulb.edu,
according to the university library.
"To borrow materials
and use many of the services at the library you must be a student, staff
or faculty member. A campus 'One Card' ID is accepted," Dubois said.
The circulation desk
located near the Library entrance is where students can register to borrow
library materials, check out, renew and return library materials, inquire
about books that were not found on the shelves, and put in a request to
have currently checked out books to be held when they are returned.
The lending period
for most items is three weeks. Students can borrow up to 50. |
