| Photojournalists capture the
dramatic, candid and intriguing images of the events and people that shape
our history. Without these talented photographers, our newspapers would
not be able to fully illustrate the realism and importance of tumultuous
events in society.
Insight has long been a tradition of the photojournalism option since 1978. Over the past 21 years, this publication has featured photographs and stories of fascinating people and places. The next 12 pages is a culmination of a semester's worth of special projects created by photojournalists of Cal State Long Beach's journalism department. This semester, as the Forty-Niner celebrates its 50th anniversary, we honor the 49er alumni who have graced the halls of CSULB. The alumni featured in this issue are a sampling of the great wealth of talent, creativity, genius and athleticism this university produces. From a boxing champion to a broadcast legend, these alumni are just some of the many individuals who started from CSULB, have become distinguished professionals in their chosen fields, and are making their mark in history. The faces of these former 49ers also illustrate the great ethnic diversity this campus is known for. Many things have changed during the past 21 years since Insight was created, but one thing has remained the same: the guidance from retiring professor Wayne Kelly.Under his direction Insight has become a fixture for the Forty-Niner publications. We dedicate this special issue of Insight to him. Ana Tintocalis, Editor
in Chief, fall 1999 semester
