10.11.09 | Bryan Parys explores the One, being, and the secret to restaurant sidework in “The Last Word, or, The Eternal Present Tense,” the latest addition to the (Non)Fiction 500. Read it thrice and then rediscover this first-ever LWB micro-essay thanks to Grant Hanna’s illustrated version above.

09.13.09 | How much is spoken in the tightening of a screw or the sad little smile? In Tabaré Alvarez’s “Tucson,” Thanksgiving weekend ends with a flat tire and a Las Vegas located outside of Nevada. Find out who changes it and what’s (not) said between two childhood friends by visiting the (Non)fiction 500.

09.05.09 | Head over to the (Non)fiction 500 and learn about skeleton jives and inner blues, as Issue One contributor Gerald Locklin takes us to the Jazz Bakery for an intimate evening with the legendary Ernestine Anderson.

08.08.09 | Climbing the rope in gym class is tough, especially when your thighs are chafing from the red gym shorts that mom shrunk in the dryer. But try climbing inside a song written by one of pop’s greatest: “There I was in eyeliner and purple robe, onstage with Prince, all of Minneapolis like a bejeweled transvestite posing for the lake . . .” Paul Kareem Tayyar takes us there and back in “Pop Life,” the latest addition to the (Non)fiction 500.

06.12.09 | No one does lighters and bare bellies like Anna Mavromati. Experience both and more by heading over to the (Non)fiction 500 for an excerpt from Anna’s novel-in-progress, Slate.

05.08.09 | Friends! We know spring can be a real bummer what with the Swine-Flu-war-economic-meltdown triad still in effect, so we’ve extended our submission deadline for Issue Two until June 15, 2009. Visit the Submit section for complete details. In other news: Grab the popcorn, grab the hot sauce, grab the root beer and the peanut butter cups, because we here at Like Water Burning Press have got a short film to share with you. After making our way through Mexico, Taiwan, Japan, and Long Beach, we have compiled some of the finest bits of low-res footage (thanks to our trusty 3.2 mega pixel Power Shot A75 by Canon), and are proud to bring you “Readings from Issue One: A Like Water Burning Short.” This roughly five-minute wonder features the voices of Gerald Locklin and Tyler Dilts, never-before-seen footage of one of the fastest hair-braiders on the planet, and original music from Mike Reyes and Chad Tsuyuki of The Black River Safari.

03.17.09 | Happy Green Day! March Madness and the Irish bring readers new flash fiction about a girl, her head, and what happens when something sprouts out of it. Yes, racing fans, Sienna Zeilinger’s “Flower Child” is zooming round the (Non)fiction 500.
If you’re in the Long Beach area, please join us Tuesday, March 24th, for what flyers are calling “Fiction on a Tuesday: A Night of Readings on the Day After Monday.” Presented by Like Water Burning Press and Transcurrent Literary Journal, this intimate reading in the cozy corner that is the Multicultural Center at Long Beach State will feature four of Long Beach’s finest: Mike Buckley, Jade Hidle, Jason Casem, and Courtney Isbell Fowler. There will be refreshments, a complimentary raffle, and a special screening of our first short film, “Readings from Issue One: A Like Water Burning Short.” Click the flyer for details. Carpool if possible. We’ll see you there!

02.01.09 | Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, oysters and mussels, the wait is over. We here at Like Water Burning Press are happy to announce that there will be no more waiting. The day has come. The chickens are roosting. The cows have come home. The mustard’s in the refrigerator. The fat lady has sung. Yes, friends, after spending many hours slaving over a hot MacBook, we are happy to report that we have cooked up something truly delicious and satisfying. Our new site is chock full of meaty goodness and vegetarian delights, and all ready for 2009.
We are currently accepting submissions for the following:
